DEXLOK® Patent: Waterproof Sock Engineering Innovation
Updated April 2026
DEXLOK® is a waterproof construction system developed to address one of the most common failure points in waterproof socks and gloves: water ingress at the cuff.
While most waterproof products rely primarily on membranes, DEXLOK® introduces a structure-led engineering approach, where sealing performance is achieved through integrated cuff construction rather than material alone.
To understand why this matters in real-world use, see → Why Waterproof Socks Fail
DEXLOK® Waterproof Sock Patent System
What is DEXLOK® patented technology?
DEXLOK® is a patented waterproof construction technology that improves sealing at the cuff by repositioning and stabilising the membrane interface to reduce water ingress in real conditions.
Patent Development and Expansion
The DEXLOK® system is protected through a sequence of patents reflecting continuous development in waterproof construction engineering:
- Primary Patent
U.S. Patent No. 11,638,452 – establishes the core cuff sealing architecture and construction logic. - Divisional Patent
U.S. Patent No. 11,957,197 B2 – expands application across footwear and handwear systems. - Technology Platform Foundation
Built on DexShell’s earlier DexTretch® platform (U.S. Patent No. 10,986,878), introducing stretchable waterproof composite structures.

Application Scope of DEXLOK® Technology
The patented construction applies across:
- Waterproof socks
- Waterproof gloves
- Flexible waterproof footwear and handwear systems
ensuring consistent sealing performance across product categories and real-world environments.
From Material to Structure-Led Waterproofing

Core Technical Principle
At the centre of DEXLOK® is a multi-layer cuff sealing system with an offset geometry design.
A waterproof cuff band extends:
- along the inner cuff surface.
- around the cuff opening.
- back over the outer layer.
The fixation points are deliberately offset: outer fixation point positioned 10–40 mm further from the opening than the inner point.
This creates a multi-directional sealing barrier, reducing:
- direct water ingress from the top.
- capillary water migration through textile structures.
Key Integrated Elements
Layered Construction System
- Outer layer – durability and protection.
- Membrane layer – waterproof and breathable barrier.
- Inner layer – comfort and moisture management.
Cuff Sealing Architecture
- Stretchable waterproof cuff band (PU-based elastic material).
- Continuous fixation through bonding and/or stitching.
Adhesive Bonding Strategy
- Controlled penetration through textile layers.
- Direct interface sealing with membrane.
- Reduced wicking through fibre pathways.
Three-Dimensional Stretch Engineering
- Corrugated membrane for multi-directional stretch.
- Differential stretch zones via adhesive distribution.

Building a Waterproof Engineering Platform
System-Level Innovation
DEXLOK® does not introduce a new material. It introduces a new way of engineering waterproof systems, demonstrating that:
Waterproof performance is defined not only by membrane presence, but by how the system is constructed – especially at critical transition points such as the cuff.
Innovation Positioning
DEXLOK® reflects a broader shift in waterproof product design:
- From material-led waterproofing → to structure-led waterproof engineering
- From component-level performance → to system-level performance
At the same time, it represents a step within DexShell’s ongoing innovation pathway – building on earlier construction platforms and advancing toward system-level engineering across product categories.
